Getting Married in Palo Duro Canyon? Where to Have Your Reception
Dreaming of a Palo Duro Canyon Wedding?
If you grew up around Canyon, or spent a few years at West Texas A&M, you already know there's nothing else quite like Palo Duro Canyon. Those red rock walls, the wide-open sky. It's no surprise so many couples picture saying "I do" out there.
Here's the good news: you can. And you don't have to squeeze your whole reception into the canyon too.
We've had brides get married in Palo Duro Canyon, and in Canyon itself, and then bring everyone to Cornerstone Ranch Event Center for the reception. It's a Palo Duro Canyon wedding with room for the whole party afterward.
So if you love the idea of a canyon ceremony but you're also picturing a dance floor, a big dinner and every cousin you've got, keep reading.

Can You Get Married in Palo Duro Canyon and Have Your Reception Somewhere Else?
Yes. And honestly, for a lot of couples, it just makes sense.
The park does host weddings. The park's partner foundation says special events have to be approved and planned through the park superintendent. So your first call is to the park.
But there are a few things that push couples toward having the reception somewhere else:
Weather Changes Palo Duro Canyon is beautiful, but Texas Panhandle weather can change quickly. Wind, rain, and extreme temperatures can make an extended outdoor reception uncomfortable.
Decorating and Setup A reception venue gives couples a dedicated space for their tables, linens, centerpieces, cake table, and other decorations without having to coordinate everything at an outdoor ceremony location.
Alcohol. According to the park's FAQ, alcohol can't be consumed or displayed in the park's campsites or day-use areas. If you want a bar at your reception, that changes things.
Comfort. The canyon floor gets extremely hot in summer, and a reception means hours on your feet.
Accessibility Some canyon locations may require walking on uneven terrain. That can be challenging for guests with mobility limitations, grandparents, or families with young children.
Catering and Dinner Service Serving dinner to 100, 200, or even 300 guests requires space for catering, tables, chairs, and food service. A reception venue is designed to accommodate those needs.
Dancing and Entertainment After the ceremony, couples may want a DJ, dancing, speeches, special lighting, and a full evening of entertainment. A dedicated reception venue gives them space for those activities.
Keeping the Celebration Going Couples can enjoy their ceremony and photographs surrounded by the canyon scenery, then move to a reception venue where everyone can enjoy dinner, dancing, and celebrating together.
That's where a two-location day comes in. Say your vows with the canyon behind you, then head somewhere built for the celebration.
Before you lock anything in, check Palo Duro Canyon State Park's website and call the park. Rules and fees can change.
How a Two-Location Wedding Day Works
Here's how those days have worked for couples who've done it with us.
The ceremony happened in the early afternoon, somewhere between 1:00 and 3:00. The reception here started at 5:00.
That gap gives you time for photos and gives your guests time to make the drive. Canyon is about 30 minutes from us, so plan a little extra if you're coming from inside the park.
A few things that make it go smoothly:
Tell your guests the plan. Put both times and both addresses on your invitations and wedding website. A couple of hours between the ceremony and the reception can feel long if nobody told them it was coming.
Remember the park has a gate and a fee. Every adult guest pays the daily entrance fee, and kids 12 and under get in free. The park says it often reaches capacity and recommends reserving day passes ahead, so give your guests a heads-up.
Think about who's driving. Grandparents, little kids, anyone who doesn't love canyon roads. We've had couples run shuttles from Canyon and from Palo Duro Canyon to Cornerstone, and some bridal parties rent a shuttle for the whole group.
Have your reception ready when they walk in. At Cornerstone, we have something we call No Reception Flip. Your reception is already set before guests arrive, so when everyone pulls in at 5:00, the party's ready to start.

What About a Church or the WT Chapel in Canyon?
Same idea, shorter drive.
A lot of our brides come from Canyon, TX and plenty of couples want to say their vows at their home church. You can have your ceremony in Canyon, then bring everyone to us for the reception, about 30 minutes away.
We've also had brides get married at the chapel at West Texas A&M with a small ceremony, then have a bigger reception here.
You don't have to pick between the ceremony location that means something to you and a reception space that fits everyone. You can have both.

Planning for Weather, Travel and Guests
If you've lived around Canyon very long, you know where I'm going with this.
The wind.
A beautiful spring afternoon can turn windy in a hurry, and fall doesn't always cooperate either. An outdoor ceremony in the canyon can be stunning. Just have a plan for wind, heat and storms, and know what your guests are doing if the weather turns.
Splitting the day actually helps here. The outdoor part is short, and the long part, dinner and dancing, happens indoors. Our reception hall has over 10,000 square feet of climate-controlled space, with outdoor areas too when the weather's nice. We get into the trade-offs more in our guide to indoor vs. outdoor weddings in Amarillo.
And think about your out-of-town guests. If they're coming in for the weekend, they'll probably want to see more of Palo Duro Canyon anyway. Our local guide to things to do in Amarillo covers Palo Duro and more, and our post on what wedding guests actually need to know helps with directions, lodging and the rest.

Why Couples Choose Cornerstone for Their Reception
We're just west of Amarillo, TX about 30 minutes from Canyon, and we host weddings from about 50 guests up to 500.
For a two-location day, a few things matter most:
Room for everyone. If your guest list is bigger than your ceremony spot, it fits here.
Small weddings, too. We host weddings from about 50 guests up to 500, and a smaller group doesn't get lost in the room. Here's more on whether a large venue feels too big for a small wedding. For really small celebrations, we also have a weekday elopement and micro wedding package for up to 50 guests.
No Reception Flip. Tables are set before your guests arrive, so nobody's waiting. Here's more on the reception room flip nobody warns you about.
Indoor and outdoor space, so the Panhandle weather doesn't ruin your night.
Sunset photos. And honestly? Our sunsets are just as pretty as the canyon's. A lot of our couples take their engagement photos here too.
One stop, if you'd rather. If a two-location day starts to feel like a lot, you can have your ceremony and your reception both here.
You don't need everything figured out before you visit. Sometimes seeing the space in person is what makes it all click.
